Interesting Facts About Strawberries

  1. NOT REALLY A BERRY. Despite its name, this is not an actual berry. They are fruits found in the rose family. ‘Strawfruits’ doesn’t have the same ring to it, does it?
  2. Fresh strawberries are LOVED by most preteen kids. In a study by the University of Illinois, over 53% of seven to nine year olds indicated strawberries were their favorite fruit.
  3. There are 200 seeds in every strawberry. They are also high in Vitamin C.
  4. The largest strawberry weighs more than half a pound. The Guinness Book of World Records recognizes the largest strawberry in the world from Japan, grown by Koji Nakao. It weighed in at 8.8 ounces. compare this to your average strawberry, which weighs only one ounce.
  5. They are popular at Wimbledon. Chicken wings are associated with football. Hot dogs are popular during baseball games. When it comes to tennis, on the other hand, strawberries and cream are popularly eaten, especially among people from the high society.
  6. There is such a thing as Strawberry Museum and you can find it in Belgium. At Musee de la Fraise, you can find almost anything that use strawberry, such as strawberry beer. It is located in a town with climate and soil that is perfect for growing strawberries.
  7. It was believed by ancient Romans that they strawberry plant was miraculous because of their healing powers. They were used in traditional Roman medicine for the treatment of depression, fever, and kidney stones, among other health problems. Unfortunately for the Romans, they don’t do much to help with chronic lead poisoning.
  8. If you took just the annual strawberry production for California and laid them end to end, you would circle the Earth 15 times!
  9. You can find the world’s largest strawberry shortcake at the annual Lebanon Oregon strawberry festival. Sounds like fun!
  10. While California leads the United States in strawberry production, Florida is close behind. their season runs from December to May. Even with this added supply, many strawberries are imported during the winter.
  11. Americans eat nearly 3.5 pounds of fresh strawberries a year. It’s good that California produces over 1 billion pounds of this first fruit a year – we certainly like our share!
