How to Change Oil in a Lawn Mower

The maintenance of lawn mower is essential to spread your lawn mower life time, and the most critical engine maintenance items is the oil change which need to do a regular basis. For getting the best performance of your lawn mower engine, you must change the oil after the first 5 hours of use for a new mower, then set a schedule for it once in a year.  For instance, set a reminder to do so  in the spring or the summer.

Most lawn mowers have small 2-cycle engines that need their oil changed just like car engines. Almost all the mower engines need their oil changed every 20-50 hours of operation. Changing oil from your mower is very simple and it usually will take less than ten minutes.

Think – Safety First

Do not run lawn mower in a confined space. Ideally you should run your mower outdoors when testing. This is because carbon monoxide gas present in the exhaust fumes is odorless, colorless & tasteless, and poisonous.  It can and will kill. If you absolutely need to run the mower in a garage or workshop, it must only be on for a very short period and you must confirm that all the doors and the windows are wide open in order to provide healthy ventilation.

Set the controls so as to off & take out a spark-plug lead before start working on the moving-parts on the engine for example the blade. If possible you should remove spark plug as well so as to be completely sure that engine will not fire in case you turn the blade.

Tools Required

• Wrench set – Socket, Spark plug
• Thin container for collecting exhausted oil.
• For mopping a spillage and wiping hands take some clothes
• Plastic sheeting or Some newspapers for wrapper the ground surface or floor

Step 1 – Let’s Start

• The first thing, you should bear in mind that using the right equipment. If you do this for the first time check the vendor’s guide line for your lawn mower.
• Oil drain pan, and Funnel.
• Soft towels or rags and cardboard or old newspapers.
• For warm up you may start your lawn mower’s engine and stay not more than 100 seconds.
• Shutdown the engine. To avoid accident during your working time you must separate your lawn mower engine spark plug wire. And for this safety steps your lawn mower engine dose not start on that time. So you will be safe then.
• Cover the area with newspaper to avoid the dust on the floor.
• Clean up the area around the dipstick and go ahead and remove the dipstick.

Step 2 – Drain Oil from Lawn Mower

• Place the oil-safe bottle under the mower.
• Unscrew the plug you may use a socket wrench and move it counter clockwise until oil can escape.
• Meanwhile, you need an oil pan or a bit similar to catch the oil from the mower. Located the pan on a side of the mower which you will tip it to drain the oil until its empty.
• Never procedure a bottle that is not projected to enclose motor oil to store old oil.

Step 3 – The Process of Oil Filter Replacement

• Place the oil filter on your lawn mower.
• Move the screw counter clockwise till the oil filter can be detached. If the mower oil filter is loose enough, use your hands, or if the mower oil filter is heavily tight, you may use a pipe wrench or filter wrench.
• Look at the oil filter’s seal. Clean it off, if there is dust or other remains on the seal.
• With new engine oil, polish the clean sealing seal with oil so that it seems clean and well-lubricated.
• You can place the new oil filter into the filter adapter. After complete screw it back into place by hand.
• Squeeze the oil filter using a pipe wrench.

Step 4 – How to Refill the Engine Oil

• Locate the oil seal plug of your lawn mower. This is where you will transfer the oil.
• If you have two oil seal plugs, whichever one can be used to refill oil.
• Do not overfill. Follow the manufacturer suggestion about the refill and never put in as much oil.
• Change oil fill-plug or dipstick once all of your new oil is stored inside the lawn mower engine. Wipe the dipstick clean before injecting it back into the dipstick shaft.
• Lastly, pull the dipstick back out of the lawn mower and make sure the oil level is in correct position. The oil level marker can be comprehended on the dipstick.
• You may now back the dipstick into the shaft and sponge away any additional oil that may have dripped onto other parts of the lawn mower.
